A Guide to Installing Guttering

Although it is possible to install a run of guttering level it is often preferable to have a slight fall. Set your first supporting gutter bracket as close to the roof tile edge as possible and in from the fascia board end by 100mm. This will be your highest point in the run. Position your running outlet above the down pipe and set lower than your first bracket to give the desired fall. Tie a string line from your first gutter bracket to the running outlet ensuring the line is pulled tight to remove any dip. On longer gutter runs it can be necessary to install a central bracket to alleviate this dip.

Install remaining gutter supporting brackets to your string line at intervals not exceeding 1 metre. If the gutter run is over 4m, install a union bracket as required to link lengths of gutter together. Having fitted all brackets and unions, the string line can be removed.

Cut the guttering to the required length remembering to run slightly past the end of the roof to ensure all rain water is caught. It can be easer to install any external stop ends whilst the guttering is at ground level. Clip the new guttering into position. If you are bringing a gutter run around a corner either 90 degree or 135 ensure a supporting bracket is fitted within 150mm of both ends of the corner piece. Pour a small amount of water into the guttering at the highest point and check for flow and water tightness.

A Guide to Installing a Down Pipe

Fit your down pipe to the wall using down pipe clips usually secured with rawl plugs and screws. The down pipe needs to be position directly above the drain or gully to which the rain water will vent and select the preferred fitting for this end of the down pipe this may be a shoe, socket or maybe a square to round adapter. At this point it will not mater if the down pipe is a little too long as this can be more accurately trimmed once the swan neck has been formed.

Using small off cuts of down pipe cut to size, form a swan neck working down from your running outlet to the down pipe. At this point you can trim the down pipe to size as governed by the swan neck and finally assemble your swan neck in position fitting a final down pipe clip as close to the top of the down pipe to help support the swan. In some circumstances a swan neck is not required in which case your running outlet will fit directly to the down pipe.

An assortment of bends, hoppers and branches are available to make up more complex installations if required.
